WBT Systems Selected by Leading Mobile Operator for Pan-African Pilot

Dublin - October 13th, 2005 - WBT Systems, one of the leading providers of enterprise e-learning solutions, has been selected for the pilot to manage, track and deliver training to Celtel employees in thirteen African countries. Celtel, a major mobile network operator with more than seven million customers, is expanding rapidly on the African continent. The TopClass e-Learning SuiteTM will provide the platform for the newly established Celtel Academy.

Since its inception in 1998, Celtel has invested over $800 million in its network infrastructure in Africa and has increased its workforce to more than 3,000 professionals. Since the company has grown organically and through acquisition, each operation in Africa had its own training and development department. Celtel was faced with the challenge of training a highly dispersed workforce located up to 6,000km from its headquarters in the Netherlands.

According to CEO Marten Pieters, "We had invested so much in our network infrastructure. Now we needed to invest more in our people". The company selected a local Dutch consultancy firm Berg & Van der Meer to set up Celtel Academy as a virtual academy to support employee development within Celtel. A range of training programmes was developed and a Learning Management System (LMS) was acquired to drive the Celtel Academy initiative. "We had two key criteria in selecting an LMS; we wanted to work with a company that had all the technical expertise to drive the project and who could come up with practical solutions to meet our organisational requirements. Secondly, we were looking for a system with strong reporting functionality" says Willemijn Berg of Berg & Van der Meer. "WBT Systems met all those requirements. In addition, we particularly liked TopClass Publisher which allows us to easily compile Celtel specific courses from existing material".

Celtel will now offer a range of training programmes to its employees in English and French. The courses for Celtel’s Senior and Middle Management have been developed in collaboration with London Business School and Wits Business School in South Africa. "Celtel Academy is part of our strategy to operate as one company. This solution is helping us develop a single company culture across the Group ensuring equal access to training and education opportunities for all our employees", said Celtel CEO, Marten Pieters.

According to Declan Kelly, CEO WBT Systems, "This is an exciting project for the WBT team. We are delighted to work with Celtel to deliver this mission-critical function. Once again, we see how WBT Systems is firmly at the forefront in delivering solutions to global organisations to solve critical business issues and deliver real value".
